This special treat is a visit to the oldest surviving effigy-making shop in Singapore. To start, meet and hear the story of our favourite octogenarian who has learnt the skills and trades of making effigies from her late husband. Hear stories about the history, names and roles of some of the popular Taoist and Buddhist Gods and Goddesses, and about those who worship them.
Finally, join in to draw the outline of the embellishments for the effigies’ clothing. Watch as Great Granny meticulously weaves a thin dough-like thread onto the effigy. Try it yourself, but you’ll need a sharp pair of eyes and a steady hand! Her skilful son then takes over and showcases his painting skills on the effigy. Learn about and experience this vanishing trade before it…vanishes!
